## Definition

Staking is how proof of stake networks like Ethereum stay secure. You commit a chunk of the network's coin as collateral, and in return you (or a validator you delegate to) help confirm new transactions.

For doing that work honestly, you receive a steady flow of rewards. If you try to cheat or your validator misbehaves, part of your stake can be taken away. This is called slashing.
