## Definition

A block is a group of transactions that are confirmed at the same time. Each block includes a reference to the previous one, which is what makes the chain a chain.

Different networks produce blocks at different speeds: Bitcoin averages a block every ten minutes, Ethereum about every twelve seconds. The contents of a block, plus its place in the chain, are what get permanently recorded.
